On June 4, 2019, Justice Minister Cliff Cullen announced that fifteen Manitoba lawyers, including Pitblado Law Partner, William S. Gardner, would receive the Queen’s counsel designation. This honour is reserved for long-serving members of the legal profession who have demonstrated outstanding practice, fostered excellence in the profession, and who have conducted themselves with integrity and leadership throughout their careers.
William S. Gardner, Q.C. is head of Pitblado Law’s Labour and Employment and Healthcare practice areas, Chair of the Manitoba Employers Council and Co-Chair of the Management Caucus of the Labour Management Review Committee. Bill practices extensively in all areas of Labour and Employment law advising clients in both the private and public sectors, as well as acts as counsel to major healthcare institutions, manufacturing operations, and construction companies. In terms of community involvement, Bill is a member of the executive, and vice-chair, of the Health Sciences Centre Foundation, and is also the secretary and member of the executive of the Winnipeg Women’s High School Hockey League.
“Being made a Q.C. is both an honour and a responsibility”, said William (Bill) Gardner. “What makes me happiest is that my father was a Q.C. I am getting good vibrations from Heaven.”
Queen’s counsel appointments have not been awarded in Manitoba since 2001, when the practice was ended in the province. Bill 22, The Queen’s Counsel Act, passed last year restored Queen’s counsel appointments with a new and transparent eligibility criteria for lawyers in Manitoba. A formal ceremony will be held in the fall.
